What type of proprietary tools are you looking to replace with more open alternatives?

I’m a big proponent of Open Source software and software/services that take the user’s privacy seriously.

What tools is the collective as a whole looking to replace with more open alternatives?

(ie. Google’s GSuite)

Services I’m looking to find more open solutions:

  • GSuite
  • Evernote
  • Hootsuite
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Slack

Goggle documents and Facebook are the big ones in my view. Many useful open source alternative tools just need a little help to be good enough to replace proprietary systems or to be easy to install and administer. We can pick the low hanging fruit for the tools needed by the collective and aim to make them more usable.

Making the tools interoperable like Gsuite is a challenge. What is needed is a universal login controlled by users themselves and tools employing standards for interoperability.

I totally agree. It’s an uphill battle, but we’re taking the first steps toward making this a reality.

A universal login system that isn’t hard to setup, implement, and doesn’t spy/track the users would be great. But adoption is a major factor to making this a reality.

I have just signed up to the waiting list for https://www.uport.me/ to test out single-sign-in capabilities. Look forward to seeing what happens in the identity space! A critical foundation, for sure.
